The impending infestation of rodents in the province of South Cotabato particularly in the municipalities of Tboli, Banga, Tupi and Tantangan brought havoc and devastation to various crops. Farmers complained of (crop damage causing great losses and hunger to impoverished households especially those of the indigenous peoples in the upland The spearheading of the Food for Work or Merit system for the control of rodents is an added intervention which directly helps our farmers. The scheme of exchanging 10 tails to a kilo of rice has indeed provided food for them. The Provincial Social Welfare & Development Office (PSWDO) of the province procured 200 bags of rice and in coordination with the Provincial Agriculture Office, delivered and distributed the bags of rice as incentive for their active participation in the control of rodents. Although the scheme of physically killing the rodents is temporary, it was noted to be effective compared with excavation burrow digging and rat blanketing. |
